It just never ends!!

It should at least WARN you that it's about to ignore everything you just wrote, or that it's going into Eager Loading mode. Something along the lines of: ":select will be ignored for statements using :include"...

I love the idea of rails and what it can do, but they are seriously lacking on A.) Making it "just work" and B.) Why are they always hiding all these weird things it does without notifying the developer with a courtesy error/warning message?!
